Manners, where have they gone?
Today we listened to a very interesting sermon in church. The pastor asked the congregation if they remember listening to the table side sermons often given by mothers to "keep our elbows off the table" or "Don't talk with your mouth full of food" In today's society we have pushed manners to the back burner and we need to change this. Do you say please and thank you each time you ask or receive something? Do you encourage your children to do the same or do they follow your lead and just demand something.
I am sure you have heard of the golden rule, this of course comes from Matthew 7:12
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. In other words if you want to be respected you need to respect others.
Do you respect your parents? Are you willing to help them when they are no longer able to take care of themselves or will you just write them off? After all they brought you into this world and hopefully clothed and fed you, took care of you, provided shelter until you could provide these basic needs for yourself. Of course if you didn't receive these everyday needs from your parents then why would you feel obliged to take care of them? Hopefully though you were taken care of and you respect your parents enough to help them when the time comes. Equally as important you love and respect your children and provide them with basic needs so that they will take care of you. As the Elton John song says "It's the circle of life"
